Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology This Season.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the option to contest particular decisions made by the official, echoing the protocol currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
